Museum der Moderne (Modern Art Museum)

You can spend the night in Salzburg or you can reside in Salzburg. For example in the Hotel Stadtkrug. This small oasis directly at the foot of the Kapuzinerberg has become more than an insiders' tip. More and more people with sense of the beautiful things in life book rooms in this hotel. The owners, Hugo and Eva Lucian, as well as their employees really make the guests feel like kings as soon as they set foot in the hotel. Everyone who has ever taken a seat in the beautiful roof garden, which is by the way considered as one of the most beautiful roof gardens by connoisseurs, and takes in the view of the Kapuzinerberg, knows: This is the home of recreation. The Stadtkrug has much to offer, also regarding the cuisine. Inventive, creative and top quality meals, for which only the very best ingredients are used, have gained the restaurant loyal regular customers. They also value the wine list, which offers some good wines. The cultural atmosphere, which emanates from every corner of the house, is the special something which makes the Stadtkrug so unique for many visitors. Intangible, but somehow always present. The town's artists, actors of the Salzburg Festival, art experts or musicians meet here to discuss about art or about everything under the sun while drinking a good glass of wine and enjoying a wonderful meal. This atmosphere casts you under its spell. As the employees of the Hotel Stadtkrug can offer their guests more than only hospitality with much heart, they can also give many tips concerning the town's cultural life.

Hugo and Eva Lucian know where the hot spots are, how the guests can benefit from amenities like the Salzburg-Card and how they can reach the cultural places of interest. One of these places of interest is the Museum der Moderne (modern art museum). It is only a short way from the hotel to the museum. This obligatory visit for each culturally interested person is a real treasure. Divided into two different buildings – the Rupertinum directly in the town centre and the museum on the Mönchsberg (a hill), which was designed with modern architecture, – the modern art museum provides a broad range of contemporary art. Especially photo exhibitions have made the houses known far across the borders of the town. Artists like Helmut Newton, Christoph Schlingensief or Anselm Kiefer have already made exhibitions in the modern art museum.

However, not only the museum's contents are worth a visit. The houses themselves are also unique. While the Rupertinum emanates baroque glory, the building on the Mönchsberg impresses with its innovative and adventurous architecture.

Residenzgalerie Salzburg (Residence Gallery Salzburg)

Salzburg: Art is lived and breathed in this town - and this at every corner. However, rarely this intensely like in the Residenzgalerie (residence gallery). Here the visitors marvel at the painting collection of the town Salzburg, which has an enormous value and comprises many art works. The paintings of artists from the different eras are exhibited in the residence gallery. The painters' works date back to the 15th century, however, the residence gallery also comprises paintings from the 19th century. The marvellous and baroque atmosphere, which the building emanates, fits perfectly to the exhibited paintings – the emphasis of the collection is on paintings from the 17th and 18th century. Especially painters from the Netherlands are in the public eye of the residence gallery, but also artists from Italy, France and Austria are strongly represented here. However, the visitors of the gallery do not only see works from the past here. Once in a while special exhibitions, which also show contemporary art, take place – a successful contrast to the standard programme of the house.

Normally the gallery's opening hours are Tuesday till Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Visitors, who have a Salzburg-Card, are lucky: Due to that card they have one admission free.

Residence square Salzburg

The personnel of the Salzburg Hotel Stadtkrug can tell you where to get this card and which other opportunities you will have with it in Salzburg. As this hotel has become a real meeting point for art- and culture interested guests in the past years. The guests can not only enjoy the best service as well as cosy and tidy rooms in the hotel – the personnel also perfectly inform them about the highlights of the urban cultural life. Mr. Stotz, who works at the reception desk, proves to be a real expert in doing so. In a friendly and patient way he makes sure that each guest has “his/her” individual cultural experience in Salzburg. One of the Stadtkrug's other advantages is without any doubt its central location. With the Stadtkrug as starting point, almost all of the town's places of interest can be reached within a few minutes by foot. The house is located in the Linzergasse, directly at the foot of the Kapuzinerberg. That means: pulsing life in the ancient centre in front of the house, quietness and nature behind it. In addition to that the wonderful roof garden, which already makes the travel to the hotel worth the while. Many artists, who have participated in the Salzburg festival, have already spent an inspiring time in this stress-free ambience. Regular customers know: everyone who has ever sat down here, has wished to stay forever. This feel-good atmosphere in the Hotel Stadtkrug is made perfect by the fantastic cuisine and a wine list full of good wines. An ideal location.

Salzburg Museum

“Awesome!“ This is one of the most frequently heard words from visitors after they have been in the Salzburg Museum. It is a building which imparts a glimpse of the past - from the inside as well as from the outside. The museum is located in the artistically restored Neue Residenz at the Mozart square and convinces with a new concept. Valuable, old works of art are presented in a very appealing and aesthetic way. Many of the objects are put in the limelight or accompanied by multimedia-supported installations. Altogether it is an overall presentation, which harmonically combines the old and the new. This has also not slipped the attention of experts and therefore the museum won the Austrian Museum Award in 2007 and the European Museum Award in 2009.

The museum is divided into several areas. On the first floor relics are exhibited, which document the life of interesting and famous citizens of Salzburg, under the headline “Salzburg persönlich” (Salzburg personal). Whether it is music, literature, art, architecture, science or handicrafts – women and men, who live or lived in Salzburg, have been successful in their individual fields.

On the second floor the visitors get to know about the “Mythos Salzburg” (myth Salzburg). Here a permanent exhibition, which is located in the magnificent rooms of the residence, occupies itself completely with Salzburg's development as of the beginning of the modern era. History, art and culture of the town are documented and preserved here. The content comprises proofs of the influence of the very mighty archbishops as well as the works of the painters from the romantic era.

The museum visitors go far back in time in the Panorama Passage, which connects the Salzburg Museum and the Panorama Museum subterraneously. Archaeological findings, which were discovered during excavation works in the “Neue Residenz” new residence, can be seen here. The centrepiece as a painted Roman wall.

At the end the visitors reach the art gallery, which is located below the inner courtyard of the “Neue Residenz” (new residence). It has a size of about 500 square metres and impresses with its continuously illuminated ceiling. Here is space for special exhibitions, which change three times per year.

Visitors of Salzburg, who have booked a room in the Hotel Stadtkrug Salzburg, can obtain information about the current exhibitions and about other areas of the museum, which are worth a visit, directly at the reception desk. The hotel's personnel are always very well informed about the cultural highlights of the town. In addition to that the hotel, with its very appealing location directly at the foot of the Kapuzinerberg, is a very central starting point for cultural excursions. The museum for example can be reached within 15 minutes. The hotel guests can also book interesting culture arrangements, which combine culinary- and cultural delights in a sensual way.

Mozart's Residence Salzburg

The corner Makartplatz/Theatergasse can be reached from the Linzergasse within a few minutes. Then the guests of the Hotels Stadtkrug Salzburg are already in front of Mozart's residence, which is also called “Tanzmeisterhaus” (house of the dancing teacher). This name does not come by chance: On 3rd August 1711 Lorenz Speckner got the permission to give dancing lessons for the aristocratic society in this house. By the way Mr. Speckner had a very special relation to the Mozart family: The dancing teacher was the best man at the wedding of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's parents. This was in November 1747. As the Mozart family talked about a bigger flat in December 1765, it was very useful to know Mr. Speckner well. For the fact that the current residence in the Getreidegasse (street name) had become much too small in the meantime: the flat in the third floor of Mozart's birth house contained a kitchen, a cabinet as well as a living-, bed- and study room.

Mozart's residence

When Mr. Speckner died on 15th May 1767, his cousin Maria Anna Raab (1710 - 5th April 1788) inherited the house. In the literature about Mozart she is known as “Tanzmeister-Mitzerl“ (dancing teacher-Mitzerl). Anna Raab did not organize any dancing events in this house any more. She preferred to let the rooms and furthermore she provided the large hall for weddings.

After the Mozart family had returned from their third travel to Vienna, the time had come: They moved into the new house at the former Hannibal square. Now this house has the address Makartplatz 8. The family finally had the environment which the family members needed for their work and their life. Leopold was able to invite friends and acquaintances, could talk with them and deepen important relations. The new and much bigger flat also seemed to have given wings to Wolfgang Amadeus: Wolfgang wrote in this house from 1773 till 1780, amongst other things, symphonies, divertimenti, serenades, piano- and violin concerts, a bassoon concert, arias, masses and other sacred musical oeuvres. Here he composed “Re pastore“ KV 208, started with “La Finta giardiniera“ KV 196 and “Idomeneo“ KV 366.

The guests of the Hotel Stadtkrug do not only get to know about all of these stories and anecdotes in Mozart's birthplace. Mr. Stotz, who works at the hotel's reception desk, can also tell them everything which they have to know about Mozart. He is not only an expert for room booking, he also always has tips which make the guests of the exclusive hotel in the town centre of Salzburg to real insiders of the Mozart town due to his well-founded knowledge about classical music and jazz. Of course he can also give the hotel guests interesting information about the Salzburg-Card, which makes the access to a lot of cultural events easier and cheaper. The guests of the Stadtkrug can feel it: the employees do not only love their work, but also the town's music, history and culture.

Mozart's residence Salzburg

Mozart's Birthplace Stadtkrug Salzburg

The advantage of hotels in the city centre of Salzburg is that the visitors are very close to Mozart's birthplace. The building, which should be visited for sure during a stay in Salzburg, can be also reached within a few minutes by foot from the Hotel Stadtkrug. Salzburg without Mozart? That would be the same like roast beef without Yorkshire pudding. The Mozart family lived in the legendary birth house of the child prodigy for twenty-six years. It was the so-called “Hagenauer Haus“ with the address Getreidegasse no. 9. The Mozart family had their flat on the third floor of this house from 1747 till 1773. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on 27th January 1756 – at that time nobody would have guessed that he would become the most famous son of the town one day. Johann Lorenz Hagenauer (1712-1792), who owned the building, gave it the name “Hagenauer Haus“ (Hagenauer house). He was a trader for spices and a close friend of the Mozart family.

Mozart's birth house

In the meantime the house has become a pilgrimage site for music enthusiasts from all over the world. Inside is a museum which was opened by the International Mozart Foundation on 15th June 1880. It has been constantly reconstructed and expanded for the past decades, therefore it is not surprising that thousands of visitors from all over the world come to the Getreidegasse number 9 each year. Here you can read and see many interesting things about Mozart. Amongst other things the visitors see historical musical instruments, souvenirs, documents as well as many portrayals of the composer, which were created during Mozart's life time. The famous unfinished oil painting “Mozart at the piano”, which was painted by Mozart's brother in law Joseph Lange in 1789, is also exhibited in the museum. Other famous exhibits are Mozart's childhood violin, the original clavichord, portraits and the correspondence of the Mozart family.

For persons, who are attracted to that time, the Hotel Stadtkrug is by the way perfect: The interior and ambience of the rooms, whether apartments, suites or double rooms, remind of the great composer's life. And this without excluding modernity: All rooms are equipped with free LAN or W-LAN connection.

An interesting point for the guests of the Hotel Stadtkrug: In the back part of the building, which faces the university square, a “middle-class flat, which was typical for Salzburg at the time when Mozart lived” was designed. Furniture and objects of the daily use can be seen here – their simplicity forms an exciting contrast to the comfort which the furniture of the hotel in the Linzergasse provides.

Persons who want to know more about the probably most famous composer of all times, get lots of information and tips in the hotel – also regarding concerts with the music of the master, which is always omnipresent in Salzburg each day and at every time.

Haus der Natur (House of Nature)

Even in summer: You are never completely save from the infamous raining of cats and dogs in Salzburg. What can you do in the town if it happens? Spend your time in a coffee house? Be in a bad mood? None of this! Such a bad weather day is the perfect time to make a trip to one of the many places of interest. An excursion which is worth the while for the young and for the young at heart is a visit to the Haus der Natur (House of Nature). The name is actually a big understatement. Here you cannot only see exciting things from nature but also lots of issues from the field of science. In the house of nature you can immerse yourself into outer space. Visions of the future, like a town in outer space, are shown in the so-called space hall and there are also large pictures of the humans' first landing on the moon. In addition to that an early American outer space capsule is exhibited. The visitors can see lots of experiments and can even make some themselves in the Science Center. For example how a turbine works or they can see how the acoustic noise reaches the ear.

Haus der Natur / House of Nature

The huge aquarium in the house of nature is a real crowd puller. Many connoisseurs refer to it as the most beautiful one in whole Europe. It comprises more than 40 show basins and an amazing variety of sea animals. An especially interesting event for children: the daily feeding of the reef sharks. Another attraction are the reptiles of all kinds, which live in the 56 terrariums. More than 200 different species live in the reptile house – here you can also always see big shining children's eyes besides lots of interesting information.

In another exhibition hall, the visitors can see rare minerals and stones. They find out which domestic animals have accompanied the humans through thousands of years, they learn something about life in the Stone Age and gain an insight into the manifold animal world on our planet. To sum it up: A visit to the house of nature is the perfect thing to do on a day on which the sun does not shine.
The trip can be made perfect with a great meal in a stylish and comfortable ambience. In this regard the Hotel Stadtkrug can be recommended for instance. The owners Hugo and Eva Lucian run a hotel in which real hospitality and a sophisticated cuisine with fresh ingredients perfectly complement each other. Their hotel and restaurant in the Linzergasse has gained a reputation in the past years which exceeds the borders of the country by far. Take a break at the Stadtkrug, eat something and cuddle into one of the canopy beds – and then the sun will shine for you, despite the rain outside.

Fortress Hohensalzburg

There are some places of interest in Salzburg, which are a must-see. Otherwise you have not seen the town at all. The fortress Hohensalzburg is without any doubt one of those. Convenient: From the Hotel Stadtkrug it only takes 20 minutes by foot to reach the gates of the fortress, which towers above the town as its symbol. It was built by archbishop Gebhard in 1077, which had been about 300 years before the first foundation stones for the Hotel Stadtkrug in the Linzergasse were laid. By the way the fortress does not only look impressive: It has been the largest completely preserved fortress in Central Europe after it was comprehensively expanded by the archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach (1495-1519).

Fortress Hohensalzburg

The medieval prince room and the fortress museum are especially popular with the visitors. Persons who shun the steep climb up, do not need to worry: There has been a cable car which leads up to the fortress since 1892. The cable car ride starts in the Festungsgasse (street name). Persons who walk up the hill can later recharge their batteries with an exquisite meal in the restaurant of the Hotel Stadtkrug Salzburg. By the way at the reception desk the guests can gather lots of information about the current events at the fortress – after all the employees of the hotel are not only experts for room booking, they are also well informed about the cultural life in the town Salzburg.

The personnel can also tell much about the history of the fortress. After all the roots of the fortress date back to the year 1077. At that time archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg initiated the construction of the fortresses Hohensalzburg, Hohenwerfen and Friesach in his territory. In the 15th and 16th century this action paid off. At that time the effects of the Hungarian war reached Salzburg and the archbishops were able to flee to the fortress. This is still traceable  for the visitors today, for the fact that the Palas (great hall), the Zeughaus (arsenal) and the Schüttkasten (granary) were erected at that time. Due to the mighty “Khuenburgbastei“ (Khuenburg bastion) the last significant change to the fortress took place. Today the fortress is above all a cultural meeting place, which can be visited during the whole year. For example the courses, which are organized by the International Summer Academy, attract artists from all over the world. Other highlights in the cultural offer are events like the fortress concerts.

Cathedral of Salzburg

Lean your head back, open your eyes wide and look upwards in awe – a visit to the probably most significant sacred building of the town Salzburg, the cathedral, is a unique experience each time. It can be reached from the Hotel Stadtkrug in 15 minutes by foot and the walk is worth it: The cathedral of Salzburg is an impressive monumental structure from the early baroque era. Its beautifully designed facade and the huge dome are especially imposing. The cathedral is history in form of stones and displays the power of the archbishops of Salzburg, who have always been independent. The cathedral had to endure many bitter fates. Several fires often completely destroyed the building, but it was always rebuilt – each time even bigger and even more beautiful. Even when an aircraft bomb had destroyed the dome and a part of the cancel in 1944, the cathedral was afterwards completed restored. In 1959 the building was finally consecrated again during a festive ceremony. The impressive building also inspired Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who worked here as court organist and concert master, to compose numerous undying works of sacred music.

By the way the guests of the Hotel Stadtkrug appreciate the quick and uncomplicated bookings in the hotels for dates on which concerts in the cathedral take place. The hotel personnel are also well informed about events in the cathedral. Additionally they can always give the guests worthwhile tips about where and when interesting events take place in Salzburg. That is not all: Visitors, who have booked a room in the hotel, also find out at the reception desk which trips by foot, car, bus or train are worthwhile. However, some nice places are already located very close to the Hotel Stadtkrug Salzburg: The Kapuzinerberg, whose foot is directly behind the hotel, is an oasis in the town and always worth a trip. Here the guests only have to walk for a few minutes to flee from the hustle and bustle of the town centre. This is one of the many advantages which make guests of the Stadtkrug book the hotel in the Linzergasse again and again: the mixture between directly participating in the colourful and turbulent town life on the one hand and the opportunity to also enjoy quietness and recreation on the other hand.

By the way: persons who really want to engage in soul-searching and take some time for that, can also fulfil their expectations in the cathedral. The building is also an oasis in the middle of the town.

Castle Hellbrunn Salzburg

It does not always have to be Mozart. Salzburg has much more to offer than only the places where the most famous son of the town lived, worked and hence wrote history. Many guests also plan to visit castle Hellbrunn during their stay in Salzburg. The magnificent building was constructed in 1612. At that time prince archbishop Markus Sittikus von Hohenems decided to commission the construction of a summer residence completely in Italian style directly at the foot of hill Hellbrunn. The builders made all efforts and constructed a real pleasure palace: Hellbrunn got a large park whose special appeal lies in the trick fountains, which are up to now unique and known worldwide. The element water, whose availability is basically unlimited due to the many mountain sources at the hill Hellbrunn, was made in a skilful way the cornerstone in the concept of the castle. Everywhere in the park, in the garden and at the castle, water dabbles and sprinkles – the complex and creative trick fountains are still the centre and the attraction of castle Hellbrunn, even after almost 400 years,

Salzburg - Castle Hellbrunn and its trick fountains

Money seemed to be no issue at that time: The architects and builders were able to let their ideas flow freely here. It is no surprise that this building quickly became one of the archbishops' favourite places: Lots of festivals, concerts and other cultural events were celebrated here. In this connection the castle and its park were renewed from time to time. For example in 1730 when head gardener Franz Anton Danreiter redesigned the garden to reflect the contemporary taste. By the way the statues of god and of heroes were put into the park at that time.

The visitors can also see Europe's oldest open air theatre here. Markus Sittikus commissioned the turning of the natural stone quarry in Hellbrunn into a stage – since then countless open-air theatre- and music performances took place.

The folk museum of the Salzburg museum is now located in the Monatsschlösschen (castle about which a legend said that it was constructed within only one month) named “Waldems” in Hellbrunn. Here the visitors get to know many interesting facts about tradition, culture, belief and medicine from back then.

Persons who are interested in visiting the town and the castle Hellbrunn, should by the way book a room in the Hotel Stadtkrug Salzburg. Centrally located with a wonderful roof garden and an excellent cuisine, the Stadtkrug is a real oasis in the middle of the town. An additional benefit is that the hotel's employees can provide much information about the places of interest, that they gladly assist with the planning of a cultural trip through Salzburg and that they can of course also help to find the cheapest prices. The guests can really feel in every part of the hotel that it is a family business. Service and friendliness are not just empty words here, these principles are actively lived by the owners and their personnel.

Animal Park Salzburg

There are zoological gardens which simply have that certain something, that atmosphere. The animal park in Salzburg is definitely one of them. As the visitors of the spacious animal park, which is located close to Hellbrunn, do not see an animal show for which as many different kinds of animals as possible are put in an area which is as small as possible. In fact the animal park in Salzburg provides an environment for its animals, which is as species appropriate as possible. The operators of the zoological garden attach very great importance to this in each area of the animal park. Spacious enclosures, which come close to the animals' natural habitats in the individual parts of the world, have been created for animals from Africa like also for animals from America or Eurasia. Animals like for example antelopes or African springboks have an advantage in the zoological garden – unlike in Africa, in Salzburg they are separated from the lions...

The fact that adults and children can equally enjoy themselves is something which especially distinguishes the animal park in Salzburg. For children it is always exciting to get as close as possible to regional animals as well as to animals from other countries and the adults can learn interesting facts about the animal species by reading the multitude of information boards. Even enthusiastic hikers and nature lovers can enjoy themselves in the zoological garden Salzburg: The spacious area is a scenically especially attractive oasis within the town. It is also advisable to take advantage of the closeness to castle Hellbrunn: here adults and children can buy combined tickets at a good price. And the best is: owners of a Salzburg card even have one free admission.

You can find out more about what to visit during your stay in the town of Mozart and which advantages you can gain if you have a Salzburg-Card for example in the Hotel Stadtkrug. This charming hotel with its unique ambience and its ideal location in the Linzergasse, directly at the foot of the Kapuzinerberg, is a perfect starting point for many activities and excursions to the town's places of interest. The class of the hotel's personnel can be seen at one glance. The employees of the Hotel Stadtkrug are always friendly, attentive and of course very well informed about the offers for visitors and about the cultural events. In addition to that, the hotel has a very attractive roof garden, which connoisseurs by the way consider as the most beautiful roof garden in the whole town, and a great cuisine – actually everything which already makes a trip to Salzburg worth the while. Many regular customers say that a stay in the Hotel Stadtkrug is simply great even without visiting the zoological garden.

Hotel in Salzburg - Info

Immerse yourself into former times

The Hotel Stadtkrug, which is located in the quiet area of the historic centre of Salzburg, combines top class hotel business with original and traditional charm.

Mozart would not stay in the Getreidegasse (where his birthplace was) any more if he had the unique chance to live in Salzburg again. He would book a more comfortable residence: a pristine and stylish room in the traditional and original Hotel Stadtkrug. In the hotel, which is located in the awesome Linzergasse with the house number 20, “Wolferl”, the music talent who was born in Salzburg, would have unpacked his violin unhurriedly, sat down cosily on the original Biedermeier suite and jubilated loudly... Modern comfort and pristine ambience go hand in hand in the Hotel Stadtkrug and fuse into a great feel-good atmosphere.

The historic community centre is a first-class four star hotel, which has preserved its old charm. Whether it is a weekend for two, a romantic honeymoon or a few days or weeks far away from hectic rush and the daily routine – the guests feel safe and secure in a manorial way and like taken back to a comfortable former time during their stay in the quiet but centrally located hotel. The hotel emanates a very special allurement: Niches, stone floors and arches, gently illuminated by the incident light, spread their own charm and already give an idea of the treasures behind its wall in the tastefully furnished rooms. A high value is set on originality, quality and comfort of each room. Independent of apartment, suite, junior suite, comfort room, double room or single room – the love of detail shows itself in the exquisite furniture, selected materials, decent colours and the pristine-cosy interior design. It is no problem to also browse through other parts of the world while you are here – because all rooms are equipped with LAN or rather W-LAN. A special highlight of every room is the ample and stylish bathroom, which provides all modern comforts.
The Hotel Stadtkrug, which is run with much heart and joy by the owners Eva and Hugo Lucian, is therefore a perfect holiday- and vacation destination. Not only because of the historic flair, but also because of its central location: located right in the middle of the quiet part of the historic centre, the Hotel in Salzburg is an ideal starting point for excursions of all kind. Is there anything better than enjoying a view of the whole town while having a bourgeois meal in the hotel's romantic roof garden after taking an aperitif in the hotel's own “Prosecceria“? After this delicate food, a walk up the Kapuzinerberg, a hill whose foot is directly behind the hotel, would be a good idea. If you have some luck, you can see chamoises, which have been living on this hill for hundreds of years, during such an adventurous excursion. In Salzburg, especially in its historic centre, which gained international recognition due to its nomination as world cultural heritage by the UNESCO in 1997, the guests walk on diverse tracks between tradition and modernity. Whether it is Mozart's birthplace, castle Hohensalzburg, the cathedral of Salzburg, castle Hellbrunn and its Wasserspiele (trick fountains), “Residenzgalerie Salzburg” (residence gallery Salzburg), and the animal park Salzburg, “Museum der Moderne Mönchsberg” (modern art museum Mönchsberg) or simply a ramble through the historic centre. If you come this far as holiday maker. Because no one leaves the Stadtkrug completely voluntarily – Wolferl would also confirm this – even tough it is also so very beautiful outside the hotel!
