Salzburg Museum

“Awesome!“ This is one of the most frequently heard words from visitors after they have been in the Salzburg Museum. It is a building which imparts a glimpse of the past - from the inside as well as from the outside. The museum is located in the artistically restored Neue Residenz at the Mozart square and convinces with a new concept. Valuable, old works of art are presented in a very appealing and aesthetic way. Many of the objects are put in the limelight or accompanied by multimedia-supported installations. Altogether it is an overall presentation, which harmonically combines the old and the new. This has also not slipped the attention of experts and therefore the museum won the Austrian Museum Award in 2007 and the European Museum Award in 2009.

The museum is divided into several areas. On the first floor relics are exhibited, which document the life of interesting and famous citizens of Salzburg, under the headline “Salzburg persönlich” (Salzburg personal). Whether it is music, literature, art, architecture, science or handicrafts – women and men, who live or lived in Salzburg, have been successful in their individual fields.

On the second floor the visitors get to know about the “Mythos Salzburg” (myth Salzburg). Here a permanent exhibition, which is located in the magnificent rooms of the residence, occupies itself completely with Salzburg's development as of the beginning of the modern era. History, art and culture of the town are documented and preserved here. The content comprises proofs of the influence of the very mighty archbishops as well as the works of the painters from the romantic era.

The museum visitors go far back in time in the Panorama Passage, which connects the Salzburg Museum and the Panorama Museum subterraneously. Archaeological findings, which were discovered during excavation works in the “Neue Residenz” new residence, can be seen here. The centrepiece as a painted Roman wall.

At the end the visitors reach the art gallery, which is located below the inner courtyard of the “Neue Residenz” (new residence). It has a size of about 500 square metres and impresses with its continuously illuminated ceiling. Here is space for special exhibitions, which change three times per year.

Visitors of Salzburg, who have booked a room in the Hotel Stadtkrug Salzburg, can obtain information about the current exhibitions and about other areas of the museum, which are worth a visit, directly at the reception desk. The hotel's personnel are always very well informed about the cultural highlights of the town. In addition to that the hotel, with its very appealing location directly at the foot of the Kapuzinerberg, is a very central starting point for cultural excursions. The museum for example can be reached within 15 minutes. The hotel guests can also book interesting culture arrangements, which combine culinary- and cultural delights in a sensual way.
