Haus der Natur (House of Nature)

Even in summer: You are never completely save from the infamous raining of cats and dogs in Salzburg. What can you do in the town if it happens? Spend your time in a coffee house? Be in a bad mood? None of this! Such a bad weather day is the perfect time to make a trip to one of the many places of interest. An excursion which is worth the while for the young and for the young at heart is a visit to the Haus der Natur (House of Nature). The name is actually a big understatement. Here you cannot only see exciting things from nature but also lots of issues from the field of science. In the house of nature you can immerse yourself into outer space. Visions of the future, like a town in outer space, are shown in the so-called space hall and there are also large pictures of the humans' first landing on the moon. In addition to that an early American outer space capsule is exhibited. The visitors can see lots of experiments and can even make some themselves in the Science Center. For example how a turbine works or they can see how the acoustic noise reaches the ear.

The huge aquarium in the house of nature is a real crowd puller. Many connoisseurs refer to it as the most beautiful one in whole Europe. It comprises more than 40 show basins and an amazing variety of sea animals. An especially interesting event for children: the daily feeding of the reef sharks. Another attraction are the reptiles of all kinds, which live in the 56 terrariums. More than 200 different species live in the reptile house – here you can also always see big shining children's eyes besides lots of interesting information.

In another exhibition hall, the visitors can see rare minerals and stones. They find out which domestic animals have accompanied the humans through thousands of years, they learn something about life in the Stone Age and gain an insight into the manifold animal world on our planet. To sum it up: A visit to the house of nature is the perfect thing to do on a day on which the sun does not shine.
